What is a token in crypto?

Last reviewed:

A token is a digital asset created on top of an existing blockchain, often by a smart contract. A coin, like bitcoin or ether, belongs to its own blockchain. Tokens can stand for many things: a stablecoin, a game item, a vote in a project or an NFT. Creating a token is easy, so a token alone proves nothing about value.
