What is a smart contract?

Last reviewed:

A smart contract is a small program stored on a blockchain that runs by itself when certain conditions are met. Think of a vending machine: put in the right input and the result comes out, with no clerk needed. Smart contracts power tokens, NFTs and DeFi apps. If the code has a mistake, it can be hard or impossible to undo.
