What is Ethereum?

Last reviewed:

Ethereum is a blockchain that can run programs called smart contracts, not just send payments. It launched in 2015, and its own coin is called ether (ETH). Many tokens, NFTs and DeFi apps are built on it. In 2022, Ethereum switched from mining to proof of stake, a different way of keeping the network honest.
