What is an altcoin?

An altcoin is any cryptocurrency other than bitcoin. The name means "alternative coin." Thousands exist, with very different designs and goals. Some are large and widely used, like ether, while many are small, unproven or abandoned. Most altcoins are riskier and more volatile than bitcoin, and many have failed completely.
