The short lesson
For years, crypto tax reporting was patchy. Form 1099-DA, “Digital Asset Proceeds From Broker Transactions,” changes that. It is the IRS form that crypto brokers, such as many exchanges, use to report your sales to you and to the IRS.
What it shows
- What you sold or exchanged, and when.
- Gross proceeds.
- For certain assets bought in later years, your cost basis.
Timing
Brokers report gross proceeds for sales in 2025, on forms you receive in early 2026. Cost basis reporting phases in for certain transactions starting in 2026.
What you still need to do
- Keep your own records. Coins moved in from another wallet or exchange may show no basis on the form. You need your own cost basis records.
- Report everything. The form helps, but you report sales on Form 8949 whether or not you get a 1099-DA.
