Crypto taxes, explained for beginners

In the U.S., the IRS treats crypto as property, not as currency. That means selling it, trading one coin for another, or spending it can create a gain or loss you must report. Crypto you receive as pay or rewards is usually counted as income. Starting with 2025 sales, many brokers send customers and the IRS a Form 1099-DA.
