Last reviewed:

The Lightning Network is a second layer built on top of Bitcoin to make small payments faster and cheaper. Two people open a payment channel, send many payments back and forth off the main chain, and later settle the final balance on the Bitcoin blockchain. It is a common example of a layer 2.
