What is a satoshi?

Last reviewed:

A satoshi, often shortened to "sat," is the smallest unit of bitcoin. One bitcoin equals 100 million satoshis, so one satoshi is 0.00000001 bitcoin. The unit is named after Bitcoin's creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. Because bitcoin can be split this finely, people can send or hold tiny amounts without needing a whole coin.
