Pig butchering scam, explained for beginners

Last reviewed:

A pig butchering scam is a long con where a stranger builds trust over weeks, often through a text, dating app or social media, then steers the victim into a fake crypto investment site. The site shows made-up gains to get bigger deposits. When the victim tries to withdraw, new fees appear and the money is gone. The name comes from fattening a pig before slaughter.
