Spot ETF vs owning the coins

Three ways people hold exposure

  • Spot ETF: you own fund shares in a brokerage account. The fund's custodian holds the bitcoin. You can't send it to a wallet. There are yearly fees.
  • Exchange balance: the exchange holds coins for you. You can withdraw, but you depend on the company.
  • Self-custody: you hold the keys. Full control, full responsibility.

Things to compare

  • Who holds the keys, and what happens in a bankruptcy.
  • Fees: fund expense ratios vs trading and withdrawal fees.
  • Trading hours: ETFs follow stock market hours; crypto trades 24/7.
  • None of these is FDIC insured against price falls.
