What happens if a crypto exchange goes bankrupt?

The short lesson

When a crypto exchange fails, the first thing customers usually see is a withdrawal freeze. Then comes a bankruptcy filing, and a long legal process.

What it can mean for you

  • You may be a creditor, not an owner. Depending on the exchange’s terms and the court, your coins might be treated as the company’s property, and you get a claim.
  • It can take years. Big crypto bankruptcies have run for years before payouts.
  • No FDIC safety net. See is crypto FDIC insured.

In 2022, several large crypto firms filed for bankruptcy. The CFTC later charged FTX’s founder with fraud. Customers learned how much rides on who holds the keys.

How people reduce this risk

  • Read the exchange’s terms on custody and bankruptcy.
  • Consider self-custody for funds you do not need on the exchange, if you are ready to manage keys.
  • Beware of “bankruptcy claim” scams asking for fees or seed phrases.

Will I get my crypto back?

Sometimes partly, sometimes in cash value, and often after a long time. It depends on the case.

Is my crypto insured on an exchange?

Not by the FDIC. Any private insurance is limited. Ask for details in writing.

Can I withdraw during bankruptcy?

Usually not until the court approves a plan.
