What is a passkey, and does it help with crypto security?

The short lesson

A passkey lets you sign in to a website or app without a password. Your phone or computer keeps a private key, and the site keeps the matching public key. When you sign in, your device proves it has the key, usually after your fingerprint, face or PIN.

The big benefit is phishing resistance. A passkey is tied to the real website’s address. A fake login page cannot use it, even if you are fooled. Passwords and texted codes do not have that protection.

Where passkeys help with crypto

  • Exchange and email accounts. If your exchange or email offers passkeys, they can block the most common account takeovers. Your email matters because it resets everything else.
  • Replacing SMS codes. Text codes are exposed to SIM swaps.

Where they do not

A passkey protects an account login. It does not protect a self-custody wallet’s seed phrase, and it cannot stop you from approving a bad transaction. Those still need your own checks.

Common questions

Is a passkey better than an authenticator app?

For phishing, yes. CISA calls FIDO-based sign-in phishing-resistant. An authenticator app is still much better than SMS.

Can I lose a passkey?

Yes, if you lose the device and have no synced copy or backup sign-in method. Set up recovery options.

Does a passkey protect my hardware wallet?

No. It protects account logins. Your seed phrase and transaction checks are separate.
