What is bitcoin?
Bitcoin explained in plain words for beginners: what it is, how it works and how to stay safe. Free, education only.
Short answer
Bitcoin is digital money that runs on a public network of computers instead of a bank. Every payment is recorded on a shared list called a blockchain, and only 21 million bitcoin will ever exist.
Common questions
Who controls bitcoin?
No single company or government. Thousands of computers run the same open-source software and check each other's work.
Do I need to buy a whole bitcoin?
No. One bitcoin splits into 100 million units called satoshis, so people can own small fractions.
Is bitcoin anonymous?
Not really. Every payment is public. Addresses do not show names, but exchanges and investigators can often link them to people.
Can bitcoin be lost?
Yes. If you lose the keys or the seed phrase for your wallet, nobody can restore it for you.
