What is a whale in crypto?

Last reviewed:

A whale is a person or group that holds a very large amount of a cryptocurrency. Because whales own so much, their buying or selling can move prices, especially for smaller coins with low liquidity. Blockchains are public, so people often watch big wallets. Whale activity is a reason prices can jump or drop suddenly.
