What is CBDC?

Last reviewed:

A CBDC, or central bank digital currency, is digital money issued directly by a country's central bank. Unlike bitcoin, it is controlled by the government and works like a digital version of cash. Several countries are testing or using one. In January 2025, a U.S. executive order barred federal agencies from creating or promoting a CBDC.
