The short lesson
Dogecoin is a cryptocurrency and its own blockchain network. It began as a light-hearted fork of the Litecoin and Bitcoin code family, and kept going because of a big online community.
- Consensus: proof of work using the Scrypt algorithm.
- Merged mining: since 2014 many Litecoin miners also mine Dogecoin at the same time.
- Blocks: about one a minute.
- Supply: a fixed block reward with no cap, so new coins keep being added each year. That differs from Bitcoin’s 21 million limit.
We never show prices, forecasts or picks. This page explains what the network is and how it works.
Risks to understand
Prices of meme-famous coins can swing on social media posts. Scammers use celebrity names in fake giveaways. Use the official wallets listed by the project and check the network before sending.
