Optimistic vs ZK rollups: how layer 2s prove their work

Optimistic vs ZK rollups

The short lesson

Both kinds of layer 2 run transactions off Ethereum and post the data back. They differ in how they show the result is right.

  • Optimistic: “innocent until proven guilty.” A challenge window, often about 7 days, delays native withdrawals.
  • ZK: a cryptographic proof checks every batch, so withdrawals can finalize once the proof is verified.
  • Since the March 2024 upgrade (EIP-4844), rollups post data in cheaper “blobs”.

Risks to know

  • Many rollups still have a single sequencer or upgrade keys held by a small team.
  • L2BEAT rates rollups by “stage” to show how much they rely on trusted parties.
  • Fast-withdrawal services are third parties. They add their own risk.

Common questions

Which is safer?

It depends on each network's setup. Check its stage and who holds upgrade keys.

Do I need a new wallet?

Usually not. Many rollups use the same Ethereum-style address, so pick the right network.
