Layers of wallet security

Layers that work together

  • Cold keys: a hardware wallet keeps keys off your computer.
  • Multisig: a multisig needs 2 of 3 (or more) keys, stored in different places.
  • Smart wallets: recovery by trusted contacts, daily limits and passkeys, built into the account.
  • Split wallets: a small hot wallet for daily use, a vault you rarely touch.

Signing habits

  • Read what you sign. "Unlimited approval" or "permit" requests can let a contract move your tokens later.
  • Check the address on the hardware wallet screen, not just the computer.
  • Revoke old approvals every few months.
  • Practice recovery with a small wallet before you need it.

Common questions

Is multisig worth it for individuals?

For large amounts it can be, if you can store the keys safely and practice recovery. It adds complexity.

Are passkeys safer than seed phrases?

They resist phishing, but recovery depends on the provider and the wallet design. Learn how recovery works before relying on one.
