What is staking in crypto?

Last reviewed:

Staking means locking up coins to help run a proof-of-stake blockchain. Validators who stake help confirm transactions, and the network pays them rewards in new coins. Staked coins may be locked for a time, and validators can lose part of their stake for breaking the rules. Third-party staking services add their own risks, including failure or freezes.
